My Dream Job (Plans Part 1)

I have a dream job. Everyone has a dream job, but I think I could have a chance with mine. And soon, I'll tell you why.

There's 4 main things I love in life, besides family and friends and all that. Those are: books, music, movies, and traveling. And yes, every teen is focused on music and movies or whatever, but I really love these 4 things.

In high school, all of a sudden, you're supposed to know what you're going to do with your life, because then you have to pick your college based on that and get a degree to be able to get a job, that job you decided on in high school. Well, at least in the US it's like this. I think it's stupid.

Unfortunately for this discussion, but fortunately for me, I know what I want to do with my life. I'm going to be a librarian. Preferably a Teen Librarian, but I wouldn't mind being a Children's Librarian.

To do that, you get a Master's degree in Library Sciences, so that's the end goal in terms of school. On the way there, you first have to get a Bachelor's degree. Cool thing is for MLSs, it doesn't matter what your BA is. So I can get whatever in the world I want. Obviously, on my college applications, I wrote Undecided. Not that I'm undecided about what I want to be, but because I'm not writing out my exact path to getting there. I never fit within the box of those applications. Thank goodness I found a college that agrees. I will go to New College of Florida and whatever my paper says, is what my paper says. The words don't matter so much, I'm just going to school to learn what I want to know about life. The certificate will just tell others that I'm ready to move on (and up).

Back to living the dream. I like to go to a lot of concerts/music festivals. And yeah, I've only been to about a dozen, but that's something, at least. Nearly every time I do to a concert or whatever, I end up having a conversation with whoever I'm with about wanting to join the crew and go on tour.

Nevermind touring myself, as the act. Despite loving to perform, I am not a musical writer. I like to write. I like music. I like to play music. I can't write music. Somehow, my creativity just doesn't stretch that far.

But I still want to go on tour. I don't care what I do. Even if I have to lift things I wouldn't normally want to lift or clean things I wouldn't usually voluntarily clean, I want to go on tour with them. Anyone. Maybe be the manager. Or one of the super important sound guys down on the floor of the big arena concerts. Or the person who checks the mics and instruments and hands them the ones they want during the concert.

I don't think I'll ever be able to do that, especially for a band that I really like, but I would love to do it. At least once. So the second best thing, I think, is to be in the studio.

I really really want to learn about all the sound stuff they do in the studio. Unfortunately, that isn't a class offered everywhere. But I'd love to take it, if at all possible.

How does this factor into my ultimate dream job that's halfway possible? It comes down to money. More specifically, a library with money.

Because this is my dream library, I am the Teen Librarian. And I know sound recording, because somebody taught me all about it, obviously.

My library will have a small sound-proofed room, probably near the outside of the building. This is the studio. We could name it a partly cheezy name like Booksy Studios, but write it in serious font, because this is a serious thing.

Hopefully it'll be a musical community, because this studio is open to all the local kids. And because people care about their library and community, there is enough money to make this a really sweet studio. Good soundproofing, good equipment... it's not hard to get some good recording equipment. With a mac, the right software, and some good mics, you're pretty much set. But even with all that, it's not quite a studio. There is a bit of a difference between a bedroom recording and the real deal. Both have worth, and serve their purposes, but this...this is going to be a studio.

I haven't quite figured out the hours and how to do that along with the regular library work, but that isn't really a critical issue at this point.

But wait! This is a Library! So yeah, you can record your music and put it on CDs (or some kind of tactical format hopefully), but all the final formats will be kept. With the band/musician/singer's permission, all the music will become a part of the library. There will be a certain area of the library's music section where all the final recordings of the local teens' music will be available. People can check out the music like any other band, but since they're local, I can tell people when they're performing somewhere. I can almost be like a manager for the bands. The kids can record there, the clubs or whoever wants to book a gig can check out the different current local music and ask for contact info, and then they can advertise the gigs the bands get in the little advertisement area of the library. Maybe I'll create a website too, so the bands can be contacted through finding their profile on the site, rather than the kids having to give out their personal contact info. Gotta be careful with that stuff.

Anyways, I don't have it completely figured out, but that's the general layout. And right now, it's just a possibility. But someday, it may just be my reality. And what a good reality that sounds like!

See ya.
